Re: Request for Participation in ETS Proficiency Profile Test

To evaluate undergraduate students’ attainment of the General Education goals at the institutional level, every three years we gather information about the student learning achievement and the quality of our programs to inform our progress on the UD strategic goal to provide a diverse and stimulating undergraduate environment (Path to Prominence™),
The purpose of this note is an invitation to faculty to yield 40 minutes of class time toconduct an assessment of the GenEd goals of written communication, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking, the OEA will administer the ETS Proficiency Profile test in fall 2013 in First Year Seminar courses and Spring 2014 in Senior Capstone experiences.
As a tool for providing University faculty with feedback information on the extent to which students have mastered specific general education competencies, the OEA will administer the Educational Testing Service Proficiency Profile test. This General Education test measures skills including written communication, quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking in the context of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Use of this test is one of a series of multiple measures of GenED that helps to ensure that the University of Delaware fulfills the Middle States Commission on Higher Education’s (MSCHE) requirement for General Education (Standard 12) and allows the University to provide data for the College Portrait.
Plan of Implementation
Faculty provide 40 minutes of a class period during which students will complete the paper and pencil version of the GenEd test. Faculty may serve as a proctor of the test, appoint someone else, or ask the CTAL to provide a proctor.
